Categories group your blog posts into topics and decide which website's blog each post appears on. Authors are the people you credit on your pages and posts. You manage both under **Strengthen → Content**: categories in **Categories** and people in **Authors**.

## Before you start

- You need permission to view and create categories or authors. Ask a subscription administrator if you can't see these pages. See [Users, teams, groups and permissions](/account-and-access/users-teams-groups-and-permissions).
- Every page and post needs an author, and every post needs at least one category, so it's worth creating these before you start writing.

## How categories are organised

Categories are shown as a tree. Each website's blog starts from a root category, which an administrator links to the website as its **Root Blog Category** in **Account → Settings → Content**. The categories you create beneath that root category make up the website's blog. See [Content settings](/settings/content-settings).

A category's web address sits under your blog path. For example, a category with the URL "news" might live at /blog/news. Root categories don't have their own URL field.

Categories shown in red are not enabled, so visitors can't see them.

## Create a category

- Step 1: Go to **Strengthen → Content → Categories**.
- Step 2: To add a category inside an existing one, select the parent category in the tree first.
- Step 3: Using the buttons above the tree, select **Add Category** to create a sub-category of the selected category, or **Add Root Category** to start a new top-level category.
- Step 4: Fill in the fields. The standard category template includes **Name**, **Image**, **Thumbnail Image**, **Colour**, **Short Description** and **Body Text** on the **General** tab, and **URL**, **Meta Title** and **Meta Description** on the **SEO** tab.
- Step 5: Select **Publish now**, or open the **Actions** menu (the button next to it) to **Save Draft**, **Schedule** or **Schedule with revert**.

Categories use the same draft, scheduling and **Preview** options as pages, and have a **Comments** tab once saved. See [Creating and editing pages](/strengthen/content-pages).

A new root category isn't part of any website's blog until an administrator chooses it as that website's **Root Blog Category**.

## Manage existing categories

- Select a category in the tree to edit it.
- Right-click a category to **Preview Page**, **Clear Frontend Cache**, **Enable** or **Disable** it, or **Delete** it. Which options you see depends on the category and your permissions.
- If you change the URL of a category, Structurell creates a permanent redirect from the old address and updates links to it in your other content, so existing links keep working. See [Redirects](/strengthen/content-redirects).

Before you delete a category, move any posts you want to keep into another category. A post needs at least one category to appear in a blog.

## Add an author

- Step 1: Go to **Strengthen → Content → Authors** and select **New**.
- Step 2: If your organisation has more than one author template, choose one.
- Step 3: On the **General** tab, enter the author's **Name** and add an **Image**, **Thumbnail Image** and **Description**.
- Step 4: On the **SEO** tab, enter a **URL** for the author.
- Step 5: Select **Save** to return to the list, or open the **Actions** menu and choose **Save and Continue** to keep editing.

The author now appears in the **Author** field on the **SEO** tab of pages and posts. Authors don't have drafts or scheduling: changes take effect when you save.

## Manage authors

The **Authors** list shows all your authors. Select an author to edit them. Depending on your permissions, the actions menu on each row also lets you **Enable**, **Disable** or **Delete** an author.

Before you delete an author, check whether any pages or posts still credit them, and choose a different author for that content first.
